A Test of the High Temperature E-Cat (Hot Cat)

Today, a report on the test conducted during the certification process for the E-Cat was released. The report includes many different measurements and provides an analysis of the energy density of the device. Nuclear engineer, Fabio Penon, conducted the test and concluded:
The E-Cat energy source is not conventional. In the Ragone diagram, its energy density places it very far from any conventional source. The mass which is considered to be active at the denominator is surely higher than the actualone, because a residue of sealant putty remained stuck to the resistors, as may be seen in the photograph on p. 5 of the report, and its inert weight was not subtracted from the total. On the other hand, power consumption measurements were less than optimal, because of the reported problem with the control panel; the smallness of the mass at the denominator ishowever sufficient to absorb measurement tolerances.
The COP (coefficient of performance) is not calculated in the report. The energy density is calculated in two ways based on two alternate hypotheses. Here are the average power densities based on the two hypotheses:
First hypothesis Outer temperature equals inner temperature (2.468-1.28)/0.02038 = 58 kW/kg Second hypothesis Inner and outer radiated power are equal(3.66-1.28)/0.02038 = 117 kW/kg
If we look at the calculations for the first hypothesis, the average output power is 2.468kW and the average energy consumed (input) is 1.28kW. So to calculate COP we would take 2.468kW/1.28kW giving a COP of 1.93. For the second hypothesis, performing the same calculation, we get a COP of 2.86. Rossi has previously claimed a COP of 6, but it has been noted that this test did not include periods of the device running in self-sustain mode. Presuming that the periods of self-sustain mode work as claimed, it certainly seems conceivable that the device could reach the claimed COP value of 6. Additionally, the conclusion of the nuclear physicist that the energy density is far “from any conventional source” provides strong support for Rossi’s claims.
UPDATE (9/10/12): Rossi’s North European licensee, Hydro Fusion, has issues a press release indicating that a test on 9/6/12 may have failed to reproduce the results of this test.

Former President Jimmy Carter was a “Nuclear Engineer”!
Even so what is he saying?
The question is does the Rossi Ecat (the whole unit the device to be sold)
Work as advertised by Rossi?
This goes a LONG WAY from answering that question!
That is an open question to my mind too. This is not a test of the current device to be sold, but on an experimental module. The report, to my mind, simply supports that Rossi has “something,” which I think is important to know. Also, it appears that this “something” has an energy density greater than conventional fuel sources (i.e., nuclear).
This doesn’t have the weight of a peer-reviewed journal article, but it’s better than what we had.
Reading these blogs is like smoking crack. Addictive but without any benefit. We know as much today as we knew after Rossi’s October 2011 test. What we knew then and know now is that Rossi is making claims but that there has been no verifiable third party substantiation. We know hardly anything about the scientists & engineers who wrote the report. We don’t know who they work for (Rossi?). We have no idea of their independence. Their methodology is difficult to follow. It would have been so much easier to heat (but not boil) water and measure the mass flow and temperature change. They only show 8 hours of data. Most of the skeptics who post in these blogs are not pathologically negative (or part of a conspiracy to discredit LENR). They just see a suspicious pattern of behavior on Rossi’s part. Tests with holes, performed for too short a period of time by people whose credentials and independence are unclear.
Bruno: I read almost the same comment this morning on the independent e-cat news site. Your right this is addictive information, however there is something a person can do.
If everything is ready to go forward in this science as far as the mechanics of it goes, what are we needing to actually get LENR going? If there is no one getting constant results of a common experiment how are the physicist really going to get us the information to progress in the LENR reaction machinery. I would like to see several people doing the same things to get some average results from testing LENR.

Thanks for this report. To me it shows that someone is testing and finding that this Hot Cat is working and producing lots of heat. Only INDEPENDENT, THIRD PARTY, VALIDATION TEST RESULTS are proof of Andrea Rossi’s E-Cats are real and work as advertised. GO ROSSI – finish the E-Cats and get them tested. jdh
